Brand-new releases are slightly less dominant than usual this month, thanks to the Gramophone Awards two weeks ago - Bertrand Chamayou’s Saint-Saëns album on Warner, Debussy’s late sonatas from Isabelle Faust and friends, and Yuja Wang’s live recital of Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Ligeti and Prokofiev from Berlin (the winners of the Concerto, Chamber and Instrumental categories respectively) all appear in the Top 10, and Artist of the Year Víkingur Ólafsson’s Bach recital (which was also Recording of the Year at the BBC Music Magazine Awards in April) makes a reappearance at No. 25. And it’s bittersweet to see the late, great Jessye Norman’s legendary recording of Strauss’s Four Last Songs with Kurt Masur and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig at No. 11 following the soprano’s death aged 74 at the end of September.
