Canadian-Italian mezzo Emily D'Angelo's debut recording on Deutsche Grammophon entered the chart at No. 1 last month: featuring music by Hildur Guðnadóttir, Missy Mazzoli, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Hildegard of Bingen, Enargeia was our Recording of the Week on 8th October, with Katherine describing the album as 'a hauntingly beautiful programme which works its own special magic and marks D'Angelo out as an artist determined to plough her own furrow'.
It's been a good month in general for Deutsche Grammophon (named Label of the Year at the Gramophone Awards in the first week of October), with pianists Daniil Trifonov and Víkingur Ólafsson sitting at Nos. 2 and 3 for their recent recordings of music by the Bach family (Trifonov) and Mozart and his contemporaries (Ólafsson). And in the wake of the great Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink's death on 21st October, there's been a resurgence of interest in his set of the complete Beethoven symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra, released in 2007 and described as 'a towering achievement' by The Times.
