About
Víkingur Ólafsson’s thought-provoking programme for Mozart & Contemporaries features some of his favourite Mozart keyboard works juxtaposed with pieces by a selection of the composer’s leading contemporaries: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788); Joseph Haydn (1732–1809); Baldassare Galuppi (1706–1785); and Domenico Cimarosa (1749–1801).
“Far from the glowing image of the angelic prodigy, the music on this album is mostly by the Mozart of the 1780s, a grown man and a mature composer – who in the preceding years had come to know adversity,” explained Víkingur Ólafsson. “This is the period when Mozart was not just perfecting the Classical tradition but subtly subverting it, his graceful touch as featherlight as always but the shadows darker, the nuances and ambiguities more profound.”

November 2021
There is much to admire here thanks to Ólafsson’s superb pianism, most notably in Haydn’s Sonata No. 47, Mozart’s little C major Sonata and his Adagio in B minor; his Kleine Gigue goes like the wind.
October 2021
Just when you feel you’ve got the measure of Víkingur Ólafsson he veers off in an unexpected direction...this could have been a bitty affair, yet the result is anything but.
3rd September 2021
Something that never ceases to amaze me about the Icelandic pianist is the variety of touch and sheer range of colours that he brings to his playing..Ólafsson is happily determined to forge his own path even in the most familiar of repertoire, doing things his own way yet never making his choices feel like mere gimmicks…another exceptional album from this phenomenally accomplished performer.
28th August 2021
He asks how to “deal” with Mozart: easy on first glance, but elusive and difficult once you dig deeper…His clear, agile playing, inner parts brought out, ornaments always fresh, never exaggerated, suggests he has found peace with the composer. This is just the start.
8th September 2021
Whatever he plays, Olafsson treats the music with equal distinction: articulation wonderfully fleet and clean; the phrasing flexible, always alive; the range of touch in his fingers stretching into infinity. This is a lovely album.
