Out in front by a country mile this month is Keith Warner’s 2017 production of Verdi’s Otello on Sony, starring Jonas Kaufmann in his debut as the jealousy-wracked Venetian general; the DVD and Blu-ray release of the opera also appears to have generated a resurgence of interest in Martin Kušej’s Forza del destino from Munich, which stars the German tenor as Alvaro (a role he’ll reprise at Covent Garden next spring).
Next in line is Philippe Jaroussky as a decidedly more model husband in the title-role of Gluck’s Orfeo (given in its 1774 Naples version, under Diego Fasolis), which was our most recent Recording of the Week, and in third place is last month’s No. 1 – Rachel Podger’s pared-down but supremely colourful Four Seasons with Brecon Baroque on Channel Classics.
19 year old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason’s debut album Inspiration (released in January on Decca) jumps in at Number 9 in the wake of his assured performance at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle earlier this month – the BBC Young Musician of the Year also became the highest-charting cellist ever after reaching No. 11 in the Official UK Album Chart.
