Karajan's recording may yield top position to Rudolf Kempe's 1968 account, but surely to no other. His feeling for the music, as well as his cast - especially Schwarzkopf's Ariadne, Streich's Zerbinetta and Seefried's Composer - remains outstanding.
the opera… perfectly cast, magnificently performed, and very well recorded… Schwarzkopf brings the dark tone that is needed for Ariadne’s sorrows, and all the rapture called for at the end
