JS Bach makes up 50% of our top ten this month, with new releases from Rachel Podger, Jordi Savall and Isabelle Faust making an appearance, Icelandic pianist Vikingur Ólafsson’s Bach album on Deutsche Grammophon gaining a second wind after being crowned Recording of the Year at the BBC Music Magazine Awards a few weeks ago, and Olivier Latry’s organ recital from Notre Dame attracting much attention following the sad news of the fire at the cathedral on 15th April. (In a statement on his Facebook page the following day, Latry confirmed that the instrument had escaped serious damage, and ‘will continue to delight us with its magnificence once the building is restored’).
First among equals, though, is András Schiff’s astonishing recording of late Schubert on the Brodmann fortepiano which he purchased in 2010 after ‘falling in love with it at first sight’ – Katherine’s exclusive interview with him (courtesy of Askonas Holt) will be published on our site next week.
