August 2019

The Second Symphony in general conveys a message of vigour and youthful optimism…and it is presented here in a performance of consummate technical brilliance and sustained emotional conviction…Gražinytė-Tyla really has the measure of [No. 21's]expansive structure.

June 2019

The appearance of this performance on a major prestige label will surely prove one of the highlights of this, his centenary year...It takes a performance of fierce concentration and absolute dedication to ensure this music’s hold on an audience...the CBSO, with its newly appointed fireball Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, is teamed up with Kremerata Baltica, lending extraordinary depth and power to the string sound...All in all, this has to be one of the most important symphonic releases of the year.

3rd May 2019

If I had to sum up Weinberg's style, I would say that there is a heavy dose of Shostakovich in the often bleak string writing, with an occasional whiff of Mahler...In relation to her exploration of Weinberg's music, the booklet notes quote Mirga as saying that “The journey has just begun!”. On the evidence of this recording, it is a journey that I am most eager to continue.

19th May 2019

It’s an impressive debut...This is music of despair and grief, interrupted by raw violence.

17th May 2019

His music certainly reflects several Shostakovich habits: innocent-seeming melodies, for instance, suddenly twisted into menace. But the Kaddish symphony of 1991, spiritedly played by the joint forces of the CBSO and Gidon Kremer’s Kremerata Baltica, still shows remarkable individuality…Prepare to be mightily moved.
