August ChartThis month’s runaway success is Six Evolutions, Yo-Yo Ma’s third recording of the complete Bach cello suites, which has sold twice as many copies as the next best-selling album in the chart! You can read Katherine’s thoughts on what makes this new interpretation stand out from the crowd (and indeed from Ma’s own earlier accounts of the works) here.

Other new entries to the top five include Steven Osborne’s ‘lyrical, introspective’ take on Rachmaninov’s Études-Tableaux on Hyperion, and Antonio Pappano’s contribution to the Bernstein centenary celebrations with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (of which the composer was president towards the end of his life) on Warner – Pappano spoke to Presto earlier this month about why he considers the symphonies to be a manifestation of ‘Bernstein’s true self’, and his own encounter with ‘Lenny’ as a young repetiteur. Two of our other recent interviewees also make the top 25 – Italian pianist Costantino Mastroprimiano, whose complete Hummel sonatas enters the chart at No. 17, and Scott Metcalfe, whose recording of Music from the Peterhouse Partbooks with the vocal ensemble Blue Heron was revealed as a Gramophone Award-winner yesterday morning.
