Sell-out performances at Glyndebourne and Covent Garden’s all-star production during the Christmas period demonstrate the continuing appeal to all ages, of Hänsel und Gretel in Britain. Elsewhere it is considered staple fare during the festive season.
Fritz Lehmann’s recording is a perennial favourite with a wonderful cast led by Rita Streich, Gisela Litz and Res Fischer, whose Witch is horribly sinister without resorting to caricature by virtue of being superbly sung.
Lehmann also conducts two bonus items: overtures by Wagner and Pfitzner and to complete this unbeatable package there are seasonal items from Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (with arrangements by the sadly missed Sir Charles Mackerras) and German Romantic arias richly sung by the young Hermann Prey.

The singers adopt a similar approach, especially Rita Streich, on top of her form...Res Fischer’s witch is near ideal, never camp or exaggerated...Overall this remains a fine issue of the work...it tells the story in such an idiomatic and engaging way as to be wholly irresistible despite the obvious age of the recording.
