Frédéric François Chopin

Frédéric François Chopin (1810-49)

One of the greatest pianists of all time and a distinguished composer for the piano. His Polish nationality comes through in some of the folk idioms and dances that are found in his piano music, particularly the Mazurkas and the Polonaises. As the technical quality of piano manufacture improved, so he took the limits of piano playing technique to new-found heights, especially in his Études and Impromptus. His particular blend of melodic quality and rich, but subtle, harmony gave his music a poetic and Romantic originality.

Chopin never enjoyed strong health and the travelling life of a virtuoso and feted celebrity took its toll. He died in Paris of consumption at a relatively early age.
