Bruce Liu, whose career has surged to worldwide fame and recognition since winning the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, is hailed for his “elf-like virtuosity” (Le Monde) and “elegance and lightness of touch” (The Guardian). Liu now presents a deeply personal new album: With Lunaris he invites us into a world where sound, silence and imagination converge in a luminous nocturnal landscape. Inspired by the moon’s indirect glow and the heightened sensitivity of night, the programme unfolds as a journey through shifting states of consciousness, from introspection to flashes of strangeness and dreamlike intensity.

Lunaris is an altogether enjoyable album, creatively programmed and capturing an artist who has no interest in following a predetermined route. Where things get really interesting is in the twentieth-century works, beginning with the first of Schoenberg’s Op. 19 piano pieces – a short masterpiece in which Liu is instinctively expressive.
