Strauss, R: Ariadne auf Naxos
Gundula Janowitz, James King, Sylvia Geszty, Teresa Zylis-Gara, Hermann Prey, Peter Schreier & Theo Adam
Staatskapelle Dresden, Rudolf Kempe
Still the airiest, most lyrical recording. Silver-voiced Janowitz and ringingly golden-toned King are superb as the divine lovers heading a cast as vibrant as any on disc.

2011 edition
Kempe's relaxed, languishing performance of this most atmospheric of Strauss's operas is matched by opulent (1969) EMI recording.. Janowitz sings with heavenly tone-colour...King sings [Bacchus] with forthright tone and more taste than many tenors...there is warmth and atmosphere here in plenty.
