Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde
RecommendedChrista Ludwig (mezzo-soprano) & Fritz Wunderlich (tenor)
New Philharmonia & Philharmonia Orchestra, Otto Klemperer
Ludwig recorded Mahler’s great ‘symphony for alto, tenor and orchestra’ several times (including for Bernstein and Karajan), but I always find myself returning to this 1964 Klemperer account... —

Prokofiev & Ravel: Piano Concertos
RecommendedAndrei Gavrilov (piano)
London Symphony Orchestra, Simon Rattle
Gavrilov seems either to be pummelling the keys into splinters or skimming them with featherlight virtuosity. As for Rattle, he does nothing wrong but has little opportunity to show his own... —
