About

Two very different takes on the romantic piano concerto, both equally successful. The Bliss – written in 1939 for the World’s Fair in New York – is extrovert, exuberant and virtuosic, the Rubbra a profound reflection on, and continuation of, the English pastoral tradition.

Awards and reviews

September 2020

Rubbra’s Piano Concerto in G major is something special…Piers Lane’s solo playing throughout is a phenomenon of tireless technical strength, always beautifully aligned to each work’s different style, and with classy orchestral support at every point.

Nov/Dec 2020

Piers Lane is his usual reliable self, with scintillating performances in the concertos, and Leon Botstein ably conducts The Orchestra Now, an orchestra he founded and which is a new ensemble to my music collection. They deliver the goods in typically outstanding sonics for Hyperion.

28th June 2020

Lane plays them both with deep musical insight and virtuoso dash.
