French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet was born in Lannion in 1962 and began his studies in Metz before training at the Paris Conservatoire; early influences included encounters with Georg Solti, Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez, and contemporary music has played a key role in his career.

Bavouzet records exclusively for Chandos; his discography includes Ravel’s Piano Concertos, Massenet’s Impromptus and Debussy’s Fantasie for piano and orchestra with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Yan Pascal Tortelier (which won both a Gramophone Award and a BBC Music Magazine Award in 2011/12), the Bartók piano concertos with the BBC Philharmonic and Gianandrea Noseda, Debussy’s complete solo piano works, and a series of Haydn piano sonatas which has been described as #immaculate’ (BBC Music Magazine), ‘unadulterated bliss’ (The Sunday Times), and ‘the best kind of historically alert piano playing’ (The Guardian).
