New Releases - 24th February 2017Gidon Kremer, Daniil Trifonov and cellist Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė combine to perform Rachmaninov's Piano Trios - other instrumental highlights this week include James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong's new disc of Beethoven Violin Sonatas, and Bach from harpischordist Richard Egarr. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko

More emotionally complex and ambiguous than the first symphony, the 2nd, premiered in 1911, seems to hint at the apocalyptic events that would be unleashed just three years on. This eagerly awaited recording from Petrenko and the RLPO will further delight fans who bought their recording of the 1st Symphony released last year.

Richard Egarr (harpsichord)

Richard Egarr follows his acclaimed recording of the French Suites from last year with a superb new recording of the Partitas; crowning his already extensive series of Bach's harpsichord works, and illuminating every one of their multiple facets.

Gidon Kremer (violin), Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė (cello), Daniil Trifonov (piano)

A dream team trio of interpreters for these deeply emotional masterpieces of Russian Romanticism. Rachmaninov's two Piano Trios are dark, passionate works, composed under the influence of Tchaikovsky. Included as a special bonus is Preghiera, Fritz Kreisler's transcription for violin and piano of the famous theme from Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

James Ehnes (violin), Andrew Armstrong (piano)

For their new album, James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong turn to Beethoven and two A major sonatas with very different moods. The 9th, ‘Kreutzer’ sonata, is a huge work, heroic and turbulent in character. By contrast, the 6th sonata is a serene, introspective work of great beauty.

Hallé, Hallé Youth Choir & The Manchester Grammar School Choir, Sir Mark Elder

A Celestial Map of the Sky is a vibrant work with propulsive, syncopated rhythms contrasting darker moments of reflection, inspired by two woodcuts engraved by German polymath Albrecht Dürer in 1510 that are amongst the oldest known printed European star charts of the northern and southern celestial hemispheres.

Yann Beuron (tenor), Tassis Christoyannis (baritone), Orchestra Della Svizzera Italiana, Markus Poschner

Camille Saint-Saëns, a great lover of poetry, was a champion of the orchestrated mélodie and the French coloristic style. Of the twenty-five mélodies with orchestra listed in the catalogue, nineteen are recorded here, all of them for the first time.
