New Release Round-up - 11th August 2017
Two recordings of Stravinsky feature this week: chamber music from violinist Ilya Gringolts and pianist Peter Laul, and The Nightingale - his 'fairy tale in three acts' - conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Cardiff Singer of the World audience favourite Louise Alder presents Richard Strauss in a exploration of Life and Love through his songs. Shostakovich's ballet 'The Golden Age' is also a highlight this week.
The centrepiece of this disc is the Duo concertant, which Stravinsky completed in 1932 as his only original composition for violin and piano. The other pieces on this disc are, with one exception, arrangements of works including The Firebird, Petrushka and Le rossignol.

Louise Alder was awarded the Audience Prize at this year's Cardiff Singer of the World, and was declared Young Singer of the Year at the 2017 International Opera Awards. Her debut recital disc sees her perform some of Richard Strauss's most beautiful Lieder, including Die Nacht, Zueignung, and Allerseelen.

Igor Stravinsky’s early 'lyrical fairy tale in three acts' is based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen, and is performed here in its Russian version. Stravinsky’s score, which - despite the large orchestral formation - always sounds like chamber music, is in the safest of hands with the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne under Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

Shostakovich's visionary work had vanished from theatres until 1982, when Yuri Grigorovich restaged it, with the conflict in the original production between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie recast as a clash between fishermen and society’s criminal elements. This revival of Grigorovich's choreography from Autumn 2016 is danced by the new generation of the Bolshoi Ballet, including Nina Kaptsova and Mikhail Lobukhin.
