Strings

Sibelius completed his final opus-number compositions, opp. 115 and 116, in 1929. Op. 115 consists of four programmatically titled pieces in which we find not only melodic lines and introverted sounds, but also virtuosic runs as well as lively rhythms, presupposing perfect ensemble playing by pianist and violinist.

Sibelius' Three Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 116 is also available here.

Urtext with Facsimile edited by Kirsten Beißwenger. Another edition of the cello suites? Yes, since it is more necessary than ever! Particularly in recent years, the lack of an autograph has raised a great deal of questions concerning readings, and led to a considerable amount of confusion among performers.

Like his famous symphony From the New World, Dvořák's Violin Sonatina was also written in the United States. The themes of the Larghetto so strongly evoke the song melodies of the New World that this movement has been called Indian Canzonetta in certain arrangements.

In 1876, ten years before the violin sonata by César Franck in the same key, Gabriel Fauré made a major contribution to the new flourishing French chamber music with the Sonata in A Major, op. 13. The sonata soon became popular, and by 1889 Breitkopf & Härtel followed up with an arrangement for cello by Carl Hüllweck.

The selection of thirty-six violin duos from Louis Spohr’s famous Violinschule, compiled with commentary by Kolja Lessing, meets two objectives: First of all, it is an extraordinarily delightful, musically-enriched addition to the violin-duo repertoire; secondly, it incorporates the easiest, no less original duos into the lessons for beginners.
