In 1876, ten years before the violin sonata by César Franck in the same key, Gabriel Fauré made a major contribution to the new flourishing French chamber music with the A major Sonata op. 13, and he instantly found a publisher for his work, Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig. Apparently, the publisher had picked out a real pearl from the oeuvre Faurés, because the sonata soon became popular, and already in 1889 Breitkopf & Härtel followed up with an arrangement for violoncello by Carl Hüllweck.
