This volume, which marks the 300th anniversary of the king’s birth, contains the first edition of four sonatas for solo flute and basso continuo composed by Frederick II, known as “the Great” (1712–1786), King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786.
The royal composer fully demonstrates his qualities in the four sonatas that have now been presented for the first time. Overall, the works are characterized by inventiveness, skill and variety of styles. In Sanssouci Palace, adagios full of emotion and brilliant allegro movements were evidently created, which demonstrate the virtuoso abilities of the Quantz pupil. The publisher, who is also a proven expert on the music of Quantz and Frederick the Great as an interpreter, has recorded the sonatas on CD.
