The devil Méphistophélès appears and strikes a bargain with the philosopher: Faust can have youth and the love of the beautiful Marguerite, but only in exchange for his soul... This is not an intellectual approach to the piece but the mixture of the sordid and the glamorous that we see on stage matches the faded grandeur of Gounod’s setting to a T. It’s well acted, played and sung too.
