About
Verdi’s opera of passion, blood, fire and vengeance comes to the stage in an atmospheric production by David Bösch. A quartet of world-class singers bring the principal characters of this searing opera to life. Gregory Kunde stars as the troubadour Manrico, with Lianna Haroutounian as his courageous lover Leonora. Vitaliy Bilyy is the tyrannical Count di Luna, the man who wants Leonora for himself, and Anita Rachvelishvili is Azucena, the mysterious gypsy oman unable to reveal the secret that torments her. Richard Farnes conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus in this exploration of love, cruelty, intense passion and revenge.
‘‘Verdi's melodrama is given a grand start by Alexander Tsymbalyuk as Ferrando...’’ (What’s on Stage)

Awards Issue 2018
Kunde sings powerfully and reliably but without much seductiveness in his timbre…Haroutounian offers a classy, movingly acted Leonora but is a little short on Verdian authority…The star of the show, though, is Anita Rachvelishvili as Azucena, captured only shortly after making her role debut in the production. Here’s a big, powerful voice, but one capable of silky gentleness. She sings the role with unusual sensitivity and beauty.
Opera Now Autumn 2024
Richard Farnes conducts with excellent pace and vim, and the evening gets off to a good start…Gregory Kunde is a solid Manrico…Anita Rachvelishvili is a vocally exciting Azucena.
