About

Star pianist & composer Daniil Trifonov burst onto the international music scene at the International Chopin Competition in 2010. He then went on to win the Grand Prize at the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition performing Chopin's 1st Piano Concerto in the final round. Daniil Trifonov stands for virtuosity, musical poetry and evocative power. He is the world’s top young pianist today - and the music of Chopin is close to his heart.

The album features world premiere recordings of both Piano Concertos in fascinating orchestrations by pianist-composer Mikhail Pletnev. Pletnev also conducts the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in performances of exceptional detail, lyrical freedom and chamber music-like transparency.

The solo works include some of Chopin's earliest (Variations on "La ci darem la mano" Op. 2) and latest (Fantaisie-Impromptu Op. 66) works, together with the rarely-heard Rondo Op. 73a for two pianos, a devilishly difficult piece here performed by Trifonov together with his friend and mentor, Sergei Babayan.

The atmospheric tenth variation of Mompou's Variations on a Theme of Chopin is entitled "Evocation" and, in its poigant transformation of Chopin's famous melodies, inspired the name of this album.

Christmas 2017

In this work, Trifonov staves off potential sentimentality and produces – as usual – an exquisite tone…Some listeners will undoubtedly miss the epic nature of the original orchestration, but Pletnev’s version is a welcome – and well executed – experiment…The more unusual Chopin-related pieces…are the icing on a Bake Off-worthy cake.

October 2017

By and large, Pletnev’s scoring is unobtrusive and does not overly distract, though the woodwind ensemble at the opening of the finale sounds like Chopin hijacked by Tchaikovsky. One thing is constant throughout and that is the sublimely wonderful sound Trifonov produces right throughout the register.

9th November 2017

Around the concertos, Trifonov places other early Chopin – a truly exceptional account of the Variations on Là ci darem la Mano...There’s a glittering set of Mompou variations, Barber’s Nocturne, a Grieg study and a Tchaikovsky miniature, all played with predictable faultless brilliance.

New York Times 13th December 2017

Do we need another recording of Chopin’s piano concertos? Well, we need this one, because Mr. Trifonov plays them magnificently; because of illuminating chamber-orchestra arrangements by Mikhail Pletnev, who conducts; and because of Chopin-inspired works by Grieg, Barber and others that join.
