About
Staged by Vincent Boussard
A superb new Otello from the Salzburg Easter Festival: ‘Cura is a commanding Otello with his richly coloured tenor and both fragile delicacy and fiery ardour’ (Südwestpresse). ‘Röschmann as Desdemona guarantees effortless perfection’ (Neue Musikzeitung). ‘Álvarez as Iago would be hard to surpass’ (Abendzeitung). This Salzburg production – featuring ‘a cast worthy of any festival’ (Südwestpresse) – is conducted by Christian Thielemann, who displays a command of Verdian tragedy to match his celebrated sovereignty in Wagner. He and his great Dresden Staatskapelle, a consummate opera ensemble, ‘achieve wonders’ (Die Presse), ‘generating Italian ‘Musikdrama’ with their incandescence and precise nuances’ (Abendzeitung). In his fascinating staging, director Vincent Broussard integrates video with set and lighting design to create an idealised visual context for what he calls Otello’s ‘conflict of ancient and modern, of 2D and 3D’.

August 2017
Cura’s Otello is in pretty good shape – he’s been singing the role for nearly two decades now – and his tenor can still deliver plenty of thrills…[Röschmann’s] is a moving, unusually feisty account of [Desdemona]. Benjamin Bernheim is an excellent Cassio, and Georg Zeppenfeld stands out for his resonant Lodovico…Thielemann certainly offers an interpretation of imposing grandeur and sonic richness. But it’s not a reading that ever truly gets its hands dirty.
July 2017
With José Cura, Dorothea Röschmann and Carlos Álvarez in such fine form the feeling of engagement and artistic integrity is striking in Vincent Boussard’s new production of Verdi’s grand masterpiece.
November 2017
It would be difficult to imagine a more elegantly cruel Iago, than Carlos Álvarez, who is fascinating to watch here, as indeed are most of the singers in this carefully rehearsed production.
