Franco Fagioli leads the cast, alongside Romina Basso, Yuriy Mynenko, Dilyara Idrisova, Juan Sancho and Cigdem Soyarslan, accompanied by the exuberant Polish orchestra Capella Cracoviensis under the baton of Jan Tomasz Adamus. Famed for his Stabat Mater, Pergolesi died aged just 26 but had already completed four opera seria; ‘Adriano in Siria’ is the third of these and has a libretto by Metastasio.

The set is overall strongly cast and well directed…Fagioli's Farnaspe is highly rewarding…I'm no doubt that this is an important release of a major Baroque opera, its value enhanced by being performed without cuts.

Fagioli really pulls out all the stops as Farnaspe, a role written for the castrato Cafarelli who must have been superhuman in his vocal abilities. Two-octave lunges, phrases without end – Fagioli relishes it all…Romina Basso is a gorgeous Emirena, smoothly vocalised and extremely expressive
