About

London Early Opera follow up their debut release (Handel in Italy, Vol. 1 SIGCD423, reviews below) with a treasure trove of music by Handel and his contemporaries Thomas Arne and John Hebden. The music is themed around the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens – a carnival of music and entertainments that entertained visitors for nearly 200 years on what was at the time the outskirts of London.

The booklet notes features images and expert commentaries of the Vauxhall Gardens by author David E. Coke.

October 2016

Bridget Cunningham’s re-imagining of the first part of a typical evening’s entertainment puts George Frideric centrestage, and sets the scene delectably with the flirtatious bustle of the Sinfonia to Acis and Galatea.

May/June 2016

Revelatory… a superbly performed, thoroughly enjoyable disc.

May 2016

There’s a charming ebb and flow to this hypothetical entertainment: the playful Sinfonia from Acis and Galatea leads straight into a little organ improvisation; then the Organ Concerto in B flat, played sweetly on a little chamber organ by Daniel Moult, leads into Galatea’s ‘Hush, ye pretty warbling choir’…a perfectly sensible and enjoyable approach to imagining what a typical night at Vauxhall might have sounded like

24th April 2016

an attractive potpourri by Handel and others. These bright, lively accounts of music which we know was heard at Vauxhall include an aria from Acis and Galatea and a fine John Hebden concerto, and to close, the glorious duet As steals the morn from Handel’s L’Allegro.

Early Music Today June/August 2016

if all six [discs] are put together with the same care as these two, and directed with the same verve and vigour, this will be a series well worth collecting.
