Mark Padmore justly heads the cast-list but there are no vocal weaknesses in this production. As Robert Hugill rightly says, however, it’s the sure hand of William Christie... and the thoughtful accompaniment of Les Arts Florissants that hold the whole together.

You can't really go wrong with any of William Christie's recordings of French baroque music, but this crackling account of Rameau's mystical late opera stands out as first among equals: Mark Padmore is the eponymous sorcerer, and Christie favourites Anna-Maria Panzarella and Nathan Berg star as Erinice and Abramane.

As ever, Rameau’s scoring is ravishing, and William Christie and his Les Arts Florissants never let us lose sight of
its unique flavor. The playing and Erato’s recording are just about ideal: the instruments and voices are
perfectly balanced and crystal clear, and the depth and special effects called for give us a theatrical perspective.
