Chung's forceful conducting sweeps away the cobwebbed fustian clinging to this piece, as do Domingo's ringing hero and Meier's temptress, although Fondary's toweringly malevolent High Priest and a fine cast are more fluently Gallic.
2011 edition
When the big melody appears in Dalilia's seduction aria...Chung's idiomatic conducting encourages a tender restraint, where others produce a full-throated roar. Meier may not have an ideally sensuous voice for the role of the heroine...but her feeling for words is strong and the characterization vivid.
