Pierre Audi

Pierre Audi (Stage Director)

Born: 1957, Beirut, Lebanon

Nationality: French-Lebanese

The French-Lebanese director Pierre Audi was born in Beirut in 1957 and was educated at the Collège Stanislas de Paris and Exeter College Oxford, where he read history. Two years after graduation he founded the Almeida Theatre in Islington, and quickly established the venue as a major centre for contemporary music and drama; twentieth-century and contemporary repertoire has played a major role throughout his career, though he has also directed acclaimed productions of operas by Monteverdi, Rameau, Gluck and Mozart as well as the Dutch premiere of the complete Ring des Nibelungen.

In 1988 he was appointed artistic director of the Dutch National Opera, a position which he held for three decades – notable productions during this period included Messiaen’s Saint François d’Assise, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder (‘a formidable challenge to any opera house contemplating an alternative staging’ – BBC Music Magazine), Tan Dun’s 1996 opera Marco Polo. After stepping down from this role in 2018, Audi has worked as a freelance director at houses including La Scala, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Bayerische Staatsoper, and the Opéra Bastille.
