The German dramatic soprano Gun-Brit Barkmin was born in Rostock in 1971 and began her career as an ensemble member at the Komische Oper Berlin, where she achieved won particular plaudits for her portrayal of the title-role of Janáček’s Jenůfa; she is particularly in demand as Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth, Strauss’s Chrysothemis and Salome, Janáček’s Emilia Marty, and Marie in Berg’s Wozzeck (which she sings opposite Christian Gerhaher on the multi-award-winning DVD of Andreas Homoki’s 2015 staging from Zurich). She is also active in contemporary opera, having created the role of Elena in Mauricio Sotelo’s El Público and also attracted significant attention as Regan in Aribert Reimann’s Lear and Guinevere in Harrison Birtwistle’s Gawain.

Her discography includes her role-debut as the Götterdämmerung Brünnhilde on Jaap van Zweden’s acclaimed Ring Cycle on Naxos with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, which prompted the conductor to describe her as ‘already, for my taste, one of the great Wagner singers of the moment’.
