New Release Round-up, New Release Round-up - 12th May 2017

New Releases - 12th May 2017The Classical period features heavily in this week's round up, with releases of Mozart from the LSO Wind Ensemble, Haydn from pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, concert arias from soprano Sophie Bevan and Mozart's early opera Mitridate, re di Ponto starring Michael Spyres and Patricia Petibon on DVD.

A sprightly interpretation of Mozart’s intriguing Gran Partita, this release celebrates the wealth of talent in the London Symphony Orchestra’s wind section. Captured live during Sound Unbound 2015, the recording took place in the Jerwood Hall of LSO St Luke’s.

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)

The highly acclaimed series of Haydn’s complete piano sonatas has now reached Volume 6. It opens with the most imposing of Haydn’s early sonatas, No. 11, and follows it with two from the late 1770s: nos 34 and 35. Each of Nos 36 and 43, the last two featured here, opens a new group of six sonatas, and a new world in Haydn’s compositional style.

Christophe Balissat (le récitant), Athéna Poullos (la pythonisse), Lucie Chartin (soprano), Marianne Beate Kielland (mezzo-soprano) & Thomas Walker (tenor), Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Daniel Reuss

With Le Roi David, written when he was less than 30 years-old, Honegger produced one of his first great masterpieces. The oratorio brilliantly recreates a distant biblical past in a resolutely modern hybrid of Middle Eastern-influenced music.

Hyperion welcomes 2015 Honens Prize Laureate Luca Buratto to the label, a pianist whose fiery imagination and finesse are perfectly suited to the demands of this all-Schumann programme. Despite its unassuming title, the Humoreske is no mere miniature but a full-scale piano cycle, very much on a par with the Davidsbündlertänze.

Sophie Bevan (soprano), The Mozartists, Ian Page

British soprano Sophie Bevan performs a sumptuous programme of concert arias by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, accompanied by The Mozartists, recently launched by Ian Page’s internationally renowned period ensemble Classical Opera as an expansion of its continuing exploration of Mozart and his contemporaries.
