About

This is the second and final volume of the works of Herbert Sumsion who was Organist and Master of the Music at Gloucester Cathedral in the early 1900s. A great friend of Sir Edward Elgar, he composed a range of music for the organ which has a style very much in the tradition of English organ music of its time. Here and on volume one PRCD 1075 from Salisbury Cathedral, Daniel Cook (now organist of Westminster Abbey) performs for the first time these fine works which are new to the catalogues on the organ of St.Davids Cathedral in Wales.

Awards and reviews

Organ enthusiasts will be delighted with the notes which detail the complex and intriguing history and specification of the St David’s Cathedral instrument...Sumsion’s great contribution to British organ music is that he has managed to combine influences from [his] sources into a credible and often moving language of his own. Daniel Cook has brilliantly and creatively reflected this fusion in his playing.
