Jazz New Release Round-Up - 6th October 2022
The latest new jazz releases include the sound of listening by acclaimed drummer Mark Guiliana, out now on Edition Records, and saxophonist Bobby Watson returning to his roots on Back Home in Kansas City with Smoke Sessions. The latest reissues in Blue Note's 'Tone Poet' vinyl series include Grant Green and Kenny Burrell, while the Brecker Brothers also feature here with a reissue of their 1987 Hamburg concerts.
the sound of listening (stylised in lowercase) sees the acclaimed drummer Mark Guiliana alongside his long-time quartet of Shai Maestro, Jason Rigby and Chris Morrissey, exploring a number of different styles via vignette-style pieces that cover minimalism, electronica and post-bop; speaking to Guiliana's versatile nature.

Available as a 2-CD set or individually on vinyl, this live recording is taken from 18th October 1987, the first time the Brecker brothers had played on-stage together with their own bands. Randy's more straight-ahead band contrasts neatly with Michael's more experimental ensemble, with both brothers engaging in a little friendly rivalry trying to out-do each other.
