New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 27th January 2022

saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins
Immanuel Wilkins - The 7th Hand

This week's picks for new jazz records include Immanuel Wilkins' follow-up to 2020's Omega, experimental new recordings from Discus, and the latest releases from Criss Cross Jazz.

Immanuel Wilkins

Following up his 2020 Blue Note debut Omega, young alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins' latest opus is a seven-part suite, part-composed and part-improvised by his usual quartet of pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Daryl Johns, and drummer Kewku Sumbry. Also appearing on this album are guest spots from flautist Elena Pinderhughes and contributions from the Farafina Kan Percussion Ensemble.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

David Binney

The tenth album recorded for Criss Cross Jazz by saxophonist David Binney marks some of Binney's - deliberately - tamest material to date, more chilled-out than some of the more complex and heady works of his past albums.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

Misha Tsiganov Quintet

Another artist with a fairly lengthy history with Criss Cross Jazz, pianist Misha Tsiganov's latest album tackles the works of Gershwin and Bill Evans, as well as a healthy number of his own tunes, with great sophistication and controlled complexity.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Dave Sewelson

Saxophonist Dave Sewelson's seemingly contradictory record Smooth Free Jazz seeks to explore that dichotomy. Citing that jazz in itself could surely never be 'smooth' by its nature, Sewelson and co. push smooth jazz to its brink, retaining that easy-going core with jagged edges.

Available Format: CD

Shirley Smart & Robert Mitchell

Cellist Shirley Smart and pianist Robert Mitchell's new duo recording for Discus brings together the two's very different musical paths - but both having a shared experience in classical training - for a heavily improvised recording covering original works, as well as piano works by C P E Bach and Howard Skempton. Mitchell also makes his debut here as a poet, reading his own work on the track 'A Son of Windrush Reflects'.

Available Format: CD

Michael Bardon

Another Discus release for this week, this time a collection of solo music by bassist/cellist Michael Bardon, recorded in July 2020. Bardon's recordings on The Gift of Silence see him exploring extended techniques like prepared bass and microtonality, as well as overdubbing for an eerie atmospheric effect.

Available Format: CD

The Mattan Klein Quartet

Flautist Mattan Klein's first record on Ubuntu Music features longtime collaborators Toki Stern (keyboards), Yoni Ben Ari (bass) and Joca Perpignan (percussion) - as well as guest spots from guitarist Nitzan Bar - and sees the quartet tackling many of Klein's own works (which have won him numerous songwriting awards in the past).
