New Release Round-up,
Jazz New Release Round-Up - 18th November 2021
It's getting to that quiet time of year where new releases begin to wind down, but there's still plenty of exciting new records on the horizon this week. Our picks for the latest jazz releases include Charlie Parker tunes from the SWR Big Band, genre-defying ensemble Eskina's newest record, and Makaya McCraven's reworkings of classic Blue Note recordings.
Recorded for Charlie Parker's centenary back in 2020, this set of Bird's music includes guest appearances by Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, Tia Fuller and more, with arrangements courtesy of Magnus Lindgren and John Beasley.
Available Formats: MP3, FLAC
Dutch group Eskina explore a unique mixture of pop music, alternative rock, and modern jazz on their latest album We Were the Moon, out on Challenge Records.
Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC
French 11-piece jazz-rock ensemble Ghost Rhythms' fifth album blends exciting, driving jazz music with raucous electric sounds.
Available Format: CD
A tantalising release for fans of avant-garde trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, released in celebration of his 80th birthday, featuring his four quartet symphonies. Alongside Smith there's also the likes of Henry Threadgill and Jack DeJohnette, so he's in great company for his big celebration.
Available Format: 4 CDs
Chicago-based drummer Makaya McCraven's latest album features remixed tracks from Blue Note catalogues past, in the vein of Madlib's 2003 record Shades of Blue. What shakes things up this time, though, is the inclusion of new live players like vibraphonist Joel Ross and trumpeter Marquis Hill - connecting the past and present of Blue Note jazz.
