New Release Round-up,
Jazz New Release Round-Up - 28th October 2021
The latest batch of new jazz releases include a previously unreleased suite from British bassist/composer Graham Collier, electronica-meets-jazz flute from Tenderlonious, and the bandleading debut of pianist Ayumi Tanaka on ECM.
Commemorating 10 years since the passing of the British jazz composer, bassist and bandleader, UK label My Only Desire are releasing his previously unheard suite ‘British Conversations’. Originally recorded in 1975, Collier directs the Swedish Radio Jazz Group alongside two stellar soloists of trumpeter Harry Beckett and guitarist Ed Speight.
Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC
Even today the violin isn’t the most popular instrument in jazz, but Polish violinist Adam Bałdych uses his well-studied background in the instrument to great effect with his quintet, and Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu also makes for a great musical conversation partner.
Available Formats: MP3, FLAC
Joined by his quartet of Wetle Holte, Erland Dahlen and Audun Erlien, electric guitarist Eivind Aarset’s latest record builds on his established sound of pseudo-ambient jazz music and heavily manipulated electric guitar. Already available digitally, Phantasmagoria releases on CD this week, and vinyl next month.
Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC
Tobias Weindorf’s second album for JazzSick Records sees him joined by familiar collaborators in saxophonist Kristina Brodersen, bassist Christian Ramond and drummer Peter Weiss, while also featuring vocal contributions from punk rock vocalist Joey Cape.
Available Formats: MP3, FLAC
A sequel of sorts to his 2016 album On Flute, Tenderlonious’ follow-up similarly combines his love of jazz flute with electronic beats, namely deep house, funk and techno.
Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC
Available Formats: Vinyl Record, MP3, FLAC
Making her bandleading debut on ECM (though it’s not her first time recording for the label), Japanese pianist Ayumi Tanaka’s Subaqueous Silence sees her playing alongside Norwegians Christian Meaas Svendsen on bass and Per Oddvar Johansen on drums, whom she met after arriving in her now-home base of Oslo. Having been drawn to Nordic improvisational music, Tanaka’s music takes great inspiration from these sounds as well as her cultural roots, her sound greatly owing itself to the sounds of Japanese classical music.
