New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 9th September 2021

This week’s round-up of the latest jazz releases includes a Bud Powell live set, an ambitious new project from Pat Metheny, and the latest edition of No Business Records’ Sam Rivers archival series.

Scopes

This international quartet - consisting of members from Kansas, Austria, France and Germany - return for their sophomore album on Whirlwind Recordings, after their acclaimed self-titled debut in 2018. Featuring compositions from each member, Age of Reason continues the group’s blend of accessible melody and love for experimentation in the sounds of modern jazz.

Bud Powell

This new release from SteepleChase features recordings from towards the end of American pianist Bud Powell’s tenure in Europe. Though most of his time from 1959 - 1963 was spent in Paris, this album consists of sessions made in March and August of 1962, at the Danish Radio Concert Hall and Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen respectively.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

Petter Eldh

Swedish producer Petter Eldh’s new album on Edition embraces his fascination with beats, and features a roster of six drummers - one per track. This exciting cast of percussionists includes Savannah Harris, Eric Harland, Richard Spaven, Nate Wood, Gard Nilssen and James Maddren, all players of different stripes that accompany Eldh’s electric bass, synth and guitars, as well as a large ensemble of guest players.

Available Formats: Vinyl Record, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

A Cadillac Records reissue of the 1966 album by the American clarinetist, plus previously unissued tracks and a full live session. This edition also includes previously unseen photos, as well as new artwork commissioned for the reissue.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

The fifth edition in No Business Records’ archive series on Sam Rivers features yet more of never-before-heard sessions recorded by the multi-instrumentalist, with the help of Rivers’s daughter Monique Rivers Williams and the Sam Rivers Estate.

Available Format: CD

Fay Claassen, David Linx, WDR Big Band

And Still We Sing is the collaborative record of Dutch vocalist Fay Claassen, Belgian singer-songwriter David Linx and the WDR Big Band of Germany. Claassen and Linx last sang together on 2005’s One Heart, Three Voices, and the program for their reunion features material written by both vocalists, as well as the Ellingtonian classic ‘In a Sentimental Mood’.

Marcin Wasilewski Trio

Recorded at the same time as the trio’s 2020 collaboration with Joe Lovano, En attendant contrasts its freeform collaborative pieces with fluid interpretations of Carla Bley’s ‘Vashkar’, bandleader Wasilewski’s ‘Glimmer of Hope’, The Doors’ ‘Riders on the Storm’ and even a section of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Pat Metheny

The latest recording by Pat Metheny is the first in an iterative set of four albums, each planned to be recorded with different players (hence the ‘V.1-IV’ subheading). This live recording is improvisatory and unmistakably Metheny, featuring cuts like ‘Bright Size Life’, ‘Sirabhorn’, and new compositions like ‘It Starts When We Disappear’ in the setlist.
