New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 12th August 2021

The latest jazz releases include archival sessions from Lester Young, solo saxophone from JD Allen, and funky hip-hop-infused tunes from Brazilian instrumentalist Vasconcelos Sentimento.

Lester Young Quartet

This new Waxtime In Color edition of Lester Young recordings dates back to sessions from between 1949-51, with a variety of players but always with a rhythm section of piano, bass and drums. Some notable contributors include drummer Buddy Rich, pianist Hank Jones and bassist Ray Brown, with all sessions produced by Verve founder Norman Granz.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

JD Allen

A totally solo recording from saxophonist JD Allen, Queen City is a result of months of introspection by Allen. This isn’t some screeching skronk-fest, however, rather a set of austere interpretations of jazz standards and original compositions.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Orrin Evans

Another excellent recording courtesy of Smoke Sessions comes to us from celebrated pianist Orrin Evans, performing with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart, with the quartet completed by the addition of alto saxophonist Immanuel Archer-Evans. Originally recorded in December of last year, the quartet weren’t planning on releasing an album until they listened back to the session, and decided it was too good to keep in the archive.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Vasconcelos Sentimento

Out on Far Out Recordings next week is Furto, a record from self-taught instrumentalist and producer Vasconcelos Sentimento. A fun, wonky fusion of hip-hop breaks, jazzy brass and funky bass with a crisp, vintage production style.

John Medeski

Releasing tomorrow is avant-garde keyboardist John Medeski’s latest album, Crawlspace, with the experimental veteran venturing into some uncharted territory for him with the addition of various synthesisers, early electronic equipment and even mellotron. Crawlspace was commissioned and recorded specifically for the prolific American label Tzadik.

Available Format: CD

John Zorn

If you’re a fan of the American avant-garde, or perhaps Tzadik records in particular, you may also be interested to hear that the extremely prolific saxophonist John Zorn also has a recent album out. Well, although the music itself is composed by John Zorn, it’s performed by an illustrious guitar trio of Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Gyan Riley, with the music itself drawing upon not only Zorn’s background in Hebrew music, but also folk, bluegrass, jazz and an array of other styles. We’ve recently added the entire Tzadik catalogue to our jazz department, so do give it a peruse if you feel so inclined.
