… over its generous playing time we get to hear [Young] not only prove he was the originator of so much contemporary tenor but also highly capable of playing the younger men at their own game.

About
Dating from 1949-51, the sessions included on this LP were taped in a quartet format showcasing the leader with a piano-bass-drums rhythm section. The dates featured the outstanding pianists Hank Jones and John Lewis, as well as Lester's friend from the early Basie years, drummer Jo Jones. By the time these sessions were recorded, Prez (Lester Young) was working at Birdland with this exact group (Lewis on piano, Gene Ramey on bass, and Jones on drums), as attested by several surviving broadcasts. LESTER YOUNG, tenor sax on all tracks, plus: HANK JONES (p), RAY BROWN (b), BUDDY RICH (d). New York, September 17, 1949. JOHN LEWIS (p), JOE SHULMAN (b) BILL CLARK (d). New York, June 1950. JOHN LEWIS, (p) GENE RAMEY (b), JO JONES (d). New York, January 16, 1951. All original sessions produced by NORMAN GRANZ.
