Berlioz: Grande Messe des Morts, Op. 5 (Requiem)
RecommendedRobert Murray (tenor)
Gabrieli Consort and Players, Wroclaw Philharmonic Choir & Orchestra, Chetham's School of Music Brass Ensemble, Paul McCreesh
McCreesh provides pretty much the enormous forces Berlioz demands- 60 tenors at least- singing French Latin, as well as mostly original instruments… it’s fascinating. —

London Symphony Chorus, Wandsworth School Boys' Choir, John Alldis Choir & London Symphony Orchestra, Sir Colin Davis
Obsequies don't come much grander than this coupling under the attentive direction of a consummate Berlioz champion. There are choral strains but the orchestral detail is superb. —

RecommendedToby Spence (Tenor)
SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart, MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR, Sir Roger Norrington
Norrington's approach is pensive, sober and funereal-but it's so well paced that the sense of inevitability underlines man's mortality, and the outbursts when they do come are more effective... —

[Gardner] has the measure of this work – of its pacing, its contrasts and, not least, of its idiosyncrasies. Among my favourite moments here is the momentous hush before the final ‘mors stupebit’…Achieving... —
