About
Filmed and recorded in the Sheldonian Theatre’s architectural splendour and presented in a deluxe edition on CD audio and Blu-ray video with Dolby Atmos, this acclaimed performance from Good Friday 2021 marked Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s return to live concerts. He says: “I recorded the piece for the first time for Archiv Produktion back in 1986 and it remains truly special to me. Bach conceived the piece as much as an act of worship as a work of religious art. Almost 300 years after it was heard for the first time, it continues to move listeners of all faiths and none.”

April 2022
the wonder is that in the circumstances the performance emerges so taut, dramatically focused, and exactingly crafted...singing off-score, his choir doesn’t so much relay the narrative as inhabit it...And once again he’s struck gold in his Evangelist.
July/August 2022
I am reserving my highest praise for Gardiner, however, who conducts with real passion that is several notches better than his usual. A lifetime’s devotion to Bach has led to this point, where the arias, choruses, and chorales are shaped expressively. The pacing, by HIP standards, is often measured and thoughtful. There is even dynamic shading where the score indicates none.
March 2022
Don’t expect polish at every corner as one would a studio recording; both the deliberate and undeliberate rough edges are part of possibly the most incandescently full-blooded interpretation to date.
