The playing is characterized by energy, thrust, and spirit as well as subtlety and sensitivity where that is required, and it seems flawless from the technical standpoint. The string players produce a pleasing, burnished sound and deploy considerable tonal weight where needed, while Lane’s playing is effortlessly fluent and is brilliant in bravura passages. The recorded sound is smooth, detailed, and well balanced.

The Goldner Quartet and Piers Lane give a sonorous reading of Erlanger’s score and are equal to its muscular, sturdy temperament; indeed, Lane’s impressive execution of the piano part reminds us of just how dexterous a pianist the composer was. The ensemble sound throughout is lush and sympathetic, and never ceases to engage.
