Eric Lu is a young pianist blessed with what sounds like an ‘old soul’…The programme is both effective and unsettling…Lu’s playing is in a rare class – one that has a vacancy since Radu Lupu’s retirement. This type of sensitivity and emotional intuition does not grow on trees, especially no when served by such a technique, with richly singing tone and delicate fleetness of finger…Moreover, there’s high finesse in his control of nuance and ability to create subtle, intense atmospheres…Wonderful.

A picture emerges from this lovely recital of a gifted musician, still studying at Curtis, who can probe the depths of the piano literature with poetic sensibilities and imagination. I look forward eagerly to whatever Lu records next. Strongly recommended.

Lu’s first studio album opens with an account of Chopin’s Préludes that exudes this same sense of discovery. His emotional depth and dynamic range are particularly striking, bringing light and shade to everything he touches: the E minor prelude is a mini-tone poem; the F-sharp minor, Molto agitato, melts into something luminous. Brahms’ beautiful Intermezzo leads naturally to the Schumann (both in E-flat). Lu has all the Innigkeit required; it is Schumann’s unexpected harmonic twists, lit as if from within, that is the album’s summit. Truly magical.
