About

Thomas Zehetmair, one of the great violinists of our time, returns after almost four decades to the summit of the violin repertory, the solo Sonatas and Partitas (BWV 1001-1006) of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Zehetmair uses period instruments and techniques playing the music with vividness and intelligence to produce a recording that is deeply steeped in the music and at the same time powerfully original. The album was recorded at Propstei St. Gerold in the Austrian Alps and is issued as a double CD with a 36-page booklet featuring German liner notes by Thomas Zehetmair and Peter Gülkein with an English translation by Paul Griffiths.

February 2020

Zehetmair is among the most characterful of living violinists, a forceful personality whose ego is employed at the service of whatever music he happens to be playing…It's not exactly a comfortable listen – Zehetmair has too much artistic integrity to compromise for the sake of mere comfort – but it’ll certainly make you think again about music that in any case defies an interpretative straitjacket.

5th December 2019

With gut strings and playing without chin or shoulder rests, he is able to bring a huge range of tonal nuance and colour to these pieces..The result is performances that avoid any sense of display or virtuosity for their own sake...Some may prefer a more demonstrative approach to these perpetually fascinating pieces, but Zehetmair’s thoughtfulness is hugely rewarding in its own right.

The New York Times 12th December 2019

His touch is mistily veiled one moment, glinting copper the next.
