Seaman conducts a by turns atmospheric and lively account of the Concerto, while a movement of An English Mass – the ‘Credo’ – is conducted to striking effect by Ben Parry. Cleobury conducts the rest with a perception borne from his long involvement with Howells’s work.

Clinch’s compelling elaboration…acts as a satisfactory foil to its more consolatory companion movements to reveal a work of string personality, keen ambition and considerable expressive scope…It’s superbly championed by Guy Johnston, who in turn receives sterling support from the Britten Sinfonia under Christopher Seaman…Impeccably judged sound and balance throughout…All told, a hugely rewarding issue, and absolutely not to be missed.

All of the works were recorded in the warmly resonant King’s College Chapel, with Cleobury conducting the beautifully shaped choral performances... It’s altogether a fine collection of unfamiliar music.
