I puritani is one of Bellini’s most creative and influential masterpieces, a bel canto opera stamped with vocal and orchestral writing of intoxicating beauty and dramatic intensity. Set in England in the Civil War shortly before Oliver Cromwell’s triumph, it involves romantic and political intrigues that drew from Bellini music of melodic raptness and melancholic depth. It also inspired him to compose some of his most breathtakingly virtuosic passages, notably Elvira’s Mad Scene, that call for the utmost in theatrical power. This production includes for the first time all the music performed at the work’s Paris premiere.

The flight into a historical fantasy is a decent idea but there is too much gestural theatre here… It clearly made an impact on stage. Perhaps this was because the voices are very strong, and the incisive conducting by Manlio Benzi is idiomatic and propulsive…Durlovski’s slightly covered tone puts a nice pallor on Bellini’s longbreathed lines: she shapes phrases vividly and darts happily through ‘Vien, diletto’. Barbera’s heady, airy tenor suits Arturo’s music perfectly – no mean feat.

Barbera sings Arturo with a mellow beauty of tone that has surely never been matched in the 21st century, enhanced by expressive diction, the smoothest of legatos and a rare ease in the vocal stratosphere…and his voice blends beautifully with the soft-edged tones of Ana Durlovski, who displays a similar technical command of her instrument, excellent taste in embellishment and an undeniable dramatic engagement with the director’s alienating conception of the character of Elvira.

Manilo Benzi’s conducting is idiomatic and accommodating of his soloists, and the chorus is very good.
