About
This set is a tribute to the great Scottish pianist and Liszt pupil, Frederic Lamond (1868–1948), whose 150th anniversary falls in 2018. He was renowned as a Beethoven interpreter, perhaps the greatest before Schnabel, and his Liszt performances bear the imprimatur of the composer. All the electrical studio recordings he made, plus the remaining Liszt acoustic ones, are included.

October 2018
Taken as a whole, these performances throw open a window to a bygone era, revealing a musician less prone to what our modern ears might consider the wilful affectations of pianists like Hambourg or Paderewski…this is a compendium no one interested in performance practice or the history of piano-playing will want to miss. Highly recommended.

Lamond’s performances should be heard by all students, a learning curve in changing times and fashions, leaving much to question and discuss. APR’s transfers are entirely successful.
