About

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s I Quattro Rusteghi is a wonderful comedy. Very clever and very Italian: colourful, lively and rhythmic. The women are impertinent, cunning and seductive; the men are awful, dirty and mean. The confrontation between them is at the centre of the plot; of course this clash is explosive. This opera is a real feast for the senses and the imagination. The staging is choreographic and follows the plight of the different characters.

Each is attracted by and then put down by the others. The subject could be serious, and in a way it is; but Goldoni turns it into a richly humorous comedy about emancipation. The European Opera Centre chooses its repertoire with care to ensure it is suitable for young singers. This recording with the RLPO and Vasily Petrenko features some of the best young singers from across Europe with an average age below thirty who are joined by one highly experienced singer – Mihnea Lamatic from the Romanian National Opera.

Spotlight on this release

Awards and reviews

August 2018

Petrenko draws clean and articulate playing from the Liverpool Phil and the singers respond with character and point as they make up the battle-of-the-sexes cast. Standouts from the delicious soprano of Ana James as Felice and the likable, Latin tenor of Tansel Akzeybek as Filipeto, while the best sections of the piece – like the well-known intermezzo – are light as a feather.

September 2018

Petrenko goes full out on Italian charm…and the many soloists – spanning the continent – are all young and committed. Mihnea Lamatic is suitably grumpy as the antique dealer Lunardo, trying to honour local custom by not allowing his daughter to see her bridegroom ahead of her wedding. Romina Casucci’s pert soprano makes for an engaging Lucieta.

Record Review 23rd June 2018

A gorgeous new release...the European Opera Centre picked a great cast of unknown young voices from across Europe.
