Sinfonia Varsovia’s new album on Warner Classics is a musical birthday gift for Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki – the orchestra’s artistic director. On the album, he conducts Antonín Dvořák’s heroic and elegiac Symphony No. 7 in D Minor Op. 70 (1885), as well
as his own Symphony No. 2 “Christmas Symphony” (1980).

[The Symphony] is an overtly tonal work, coming after the crunchy chord clusters of his avant-garde First Symphony. There’s a late 19th-century richness and neo-Romantic language to the writing, brooding and densely scored…the Varsovia brass [are] on particularly impressive form…The choice of coupling is rather odd…but Penderecki offers a sprightly reading with plenty of pep.
