About

This wonderful Celebration of English Song was recorded especially for SOMM by baritone Roderick Williams deliciously partnered here by Susie Allan in a collection to gladden the hearts of all lovers of English music. SOMM is grateful to Jennie McGregor-Smith, the founder and driving force behind Celebrating English Song, the famous song series which took place at Tardebigge, Bromsgrove each summer for many years and which played an invaluable role in popularising English song. Sadly, the series closed down last June with a last recital given to a standing ovation by Roderick and Susie. The CD duplicates exactly that last programme of Roddy and Susie's Favourite Songs. It also pays a poignant tribute to some of our greatest composers of English art-song.

Awards and reviews

February 2018

[Williams] has a mellow, refined tone, distinctively poetic delivery, and is keenly sensitive to the words. And with Allan’s lively support, he can unleash sufficient vigour in the emotional contrasts of Butterworth’s Shropshire Lad songs, in particular Is my team ploughing?’s haunted unease.

February 2018

It is delivered by a true specialist, Roderick Williams, who, with his mellow tone and perfect intonation, somehow manages to find the right tempo, a range of the most appropriate nuances and the perfect emotional temperature for each song. He is also supported admirably by Susie Allan, who provides that complementary articulation and gesture from the piano. This is a treat.

November 2017

This is, quite simply, an exemplary recital of English song. The musicianship and perception that these artists display in every song makes for a deeply satisfying and very engaging listening experience. SOMM have supported their artists with high production values.
